Save any YouTube Short to your device

YouTube Shorts are the platform's short-form vertical videos — under 60 seconds, 9:16 aspect ratio, designed to be scrolled through on phones. They're YouTube's response to TikTok and Instagram Reels. Technically a Short is just a regular YouTube video that meets those constraints, which means SnapVid downloads them the same way as any other video.

Common reasons to save Shorts: archiving viral content before it gets deleted, saving trending audio for your own edits, building a reference library for content creation, or just keeping a funny clip without having to dig through YouTube every time.

Unlike on TikTok, YouTube doesn't have a built-in "Save Video" button for Shorts (only a "Save to playlist" option, which doesn't give you a file). SnapVid fills that gap — it gives you the actual MP4 file you can keep, share, or re-upload elsewhere.

How to get the Shorts URL

  1. Open the Short on YouTube (desktop or mobile).
  2. Tap the Share button (the arrow icon).
  3. Tap Copy link. That copies a `youtu.be/...` or `youtube.com/shorts/...` URL — both work.
  4. Paste the URL into SnapVid above and click Convert.
  5. Pick MP4 to save the vertical video, or MP3 to save just the audio.

Vertical video specs

Most Shorts are uploaded at 1080×1920 (vertical Full HD) or 720×1280 (vertical HD). SnapVid preserves the original resolution and aspect ratio — the downloaded MP4 plays correctly oriented on your phone's camera roll and most desktop video players. Re-sharing the file to TikTok, Reels, or Snapchat just works.

Because Shorts are short, file sizes are tiny — usually 5-25 MB for the MP4 and under 2 MB for the MP3 audio. Downloads complete in seconds even on slow connections.

Saving Shorts on iPhone

Open SnapVid in Safari. Paste the Shorts URL, tap Convert, then tap Download next to the MP4 option. iOS asks where to save — choose Files. The MP4 lands in your Files app under Downloads. To save it to your camera roll: open Files, tap the MP4, tap the Share icon, then "Save Video".

Saving Shorts on Android

Open SnapVid in Chrome. Paste the Shorts URL, tap Convert, then Download. The MP4 saves directly to your Downloads folder and shows in the notification shade. Tap it to play immediately, or open the Files app to move it to your camera roll or any other folder.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Shorts and regular YouTube videos? +

YouTube Shorts are vertical (9:16 aspect ratio), under 60 seconds, and live in their own feed. Technically they're the same MP4 files as regular videos — SnapVid handles them identically.

Do I need to change the URL to download a Short? +

No. Paste the Shorts URL exactly as YouTube gave it to you — it usually contains '/shorts/'. Or use the share button on the Short to get a youtu.be link. Both work.

Can I download Shorts as MP3? +

Yes. Pick the audio format from the results page. Useful for saving Shorts-only music clips or trending audio for your own edits.

Why don't some Shorts let me download? +

Same reasons as regular videos — the Short might be private, members-only, age-restricted, or pulled by the uploader. Public Shorts work normally.

Will the downloaded Short keep the vertical orientation? +

Yes. The MP4 keeps the original 1080×1920 (or 720×1280) vertical aspect ratio — perfect for reposting or saving to camera roll.

Can I download YouTube Shorts on iPhone? +

Yes. Open SnapVid in Safari, paste the Shorts URL, tap Convert, then tap Download. The MP4 saves to your Files app under Downloads. You can then save to camera roll if needed.

Are YouTube Shorts saved in HD? +

Most Shorts are uploaded at 1080×1920 (vertical Full HD). Some are 720×1280. SnapVid serves whatever resolution YouTube has — typically the original upload quality.
