Download YouTube in 4K Ultra HD

4K (3840×2160, also called 2160p or UHD) is YouTube's top public resolution for most content. The pixel count is four times Full HD — a single frame contains over 8 million pixels versus 2 million for 1080p. On a 65-inch or larger 4K TV at normal viewing distance, the extra detail is visible; on a phone, it isn't.

SnapVid pulls the 4K stream directly from YouTube's CDN when the video has one encoded. Not every video is available at 4K — the uploader has to provide a 4K source for YouTube to transcode and offer the 2160p option. Music videos, nature documentaries, professional channels, and gaming content are most likely to have 4K. Phone uploads, older videos, and most amateur content stop at 1080p or below.

4K is also bandwidth-heavy. A 30-minute 4K video can be 1.5-3 GB depending on motion complexity and codec. If you're on metered data, double-check the file size SnapVid displays before clicking download — phone data plans can disappear fast on a single 4K file.

When 4K is worth the storage

  • Large 4K TVs (55-inch+): The detail and color depth show up clearly.
  • Video editing source material: 4K source lets you crop, zoom, and reframe without quality loss.
  • Archiving nature or scenic footage: 4K preserves more detail for future re-encoding.
  • Future-proofing: Devices keep getting better. Today's 4K download will still look good on tomorrow's 8K screen.
  • Color grading reference: Wider color gamut and higher bit depth (HDR when available) help with reference clips.

4K formats explained

YouTube serves 4K in several codecs — you'll often see multiple 2160p options in SnapVid's results:

  • 2160p MP4 (AV1): Best compression — smallest file size for the quality. Newest codec.
  • 2160p WebM (VP9): Free codec, good compression. Plays on Chrome / Firefox / Android natively.
  • 2160p MP4 (AVC): Older H.264 codec. Largest file size but most universal compatibility.

If you're not sure which to pick, choose MP4 (AV1 or AVC). WebM doesn't play in Safari and some smart TVs.

Why 4K is "video only" — and what to do about it

A technical quirk of YouTube: anything above 1080p is served as a "DASH" stream — adaptive streaming where the video and audio are stored as separate files. The player downloads both and mixes them in real time. When you download a 4K file from SnapVid, you're downloading just the video track.

Three options to get 4K with audio: (1) Download the audio separately from SnapVid and combine them with a tool like FFmpeg or HandBrake (free); (2) Use a desktop tool like yt-dlp that auto-merges; or (3) Just download 720p — it includes audio and is plenty for most viewing. For most use cases, especially mobile playback, 720p with audio beats 4K without audio.

How to download 4K

  1. Paste the YouTube video URL above and click Convert.
  2. Look in the MP4 Video section for "2160p" — that's 4K.
  3. If you see multiple 2160p options with different file sizes, MP4 is the safer choice.
  4. Click Download — expect 200 MB to 4 GB depending on the video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't I see a 4K option for every video? +

YouTube only encodes 4K (2160p) for videos uploaded at 4K or higher. Older content, phone uploads, and lower-quality sources cap below 4K. SnapVid shows whatever resolutions YouTube actually has — if 2160p isn't listed, the uploader didn't provide it.

How big are 4K YouTube downloads? +

Roughly 200–400 MB per 10 minutes depending on motion and codec. A typical 1-hour 4K video is 2–4 GB. Sports and animation are bigger; talking-head content is smaller because the encoder compresses static scenes more efficiently.

What's the difference between 4K MP4 and 4K WebM? +

MP4 uses the H.264 or AV1 codec — universally compatible, plays on every device. WebM uses VP9 — smaller files but less compatible (no native Safari or many TVs). If you're not sure, pick MP4.

Can I play 4K downloads on my phone? +

Most flagship phones from 2018 onward can decode and play 4K, though the visible benefit on a 6-inch screen is minimal. The file size is the bigger concern — 4K eats storage fast.

Why is the 4K download video-only (no audio)? +

YouTube serves 4K as a separate video stream without audio (a format called DASH). To get 4K with audio, you'd need to download the audio stream separately and mux them with a tool like FFmpeg. For most uses, downloading 360p or 720p with combined audio is simpler.

Is downloading 4K legal? +

Downloading copyrighted content from YouTube violates their Terms of Service. Downloading your own videos, Creative Commons content, or videos you have permission to use is fine. SnapVid is a tool — what you download is your responsibility.

How long does a 4K download take? +

On a 100 Mbps connection, a 2 GB 4K file takes about 3 minutes. On gigabit fiber it's roughly 20 seconds. Speeds depend on your internet, not on SnapVid — the download is direct from Google's CDN.

What about 8K downloads? +

YouTube does host some 8K (4320p) content. SnapVid lists 8K as an option when the source has it, though support is rarer than 4K and file sizes are massive (1-2 GB per 5 minutes).
